This Saturday Wojo and I finished his CDX with a 193 and first place. I was so pleased with my boy. We had had some problems in the late spring and so trained all summer to get him back where I knew he could be. So now he is Wojo CDX TD.

And rightly so. Woo-hoo!! Congrats on the new title - and nice score and placement, too!

Wow! Doesn't it feel great to know that your training paid off?

Judy,
It was so nice to have my happy, upbeat dog back. Even when we busted the next day his performance was nice on the other exercises. My trainer is a goddess!

Exactly.
I try to think of titles as simply the verification that we are on the right track with our training, not as an end in themselves.

And the goal is ALWAYS a happy, upbeat dog. Motivated and ready to play with you. Winning is nice - I do love it and titles - but it is not what you will remember after the dog is gone.
The agility trial I was at last weekend was terribly upsetting to me. I saw too many dogs being almost abused by their handlers - over a mistake (probably theirs!) on an agility course! (Why the judges didn't take them aside for their own "come to Jesus" moment, I don't know.) Too many handlers who after one mistake just shut down on the dogs - who were still ready to play! It made DH and me get totally focused on making sure that our DOGS were having fun, no matter what else was happening.

Our instructor - who is also a judge - makes it clear that you should always remember that no dog has ever filled out an entry for a competition - or paid for training lessons. We make the decision to take them there for our own reasons. And NOTHING that happens there is a reason to not be completely kind to our dogs before, during and after the runs.

Your instructor has obviously been to one of my briefings.

I stole this from another judge: "If anything you do makes me wince, you're faulted. Anything from 5 faults to dismissal."
