I met one recently, a puppy, and boy, he was just...awesome!

Ohh, I'm so envious. What color?
Here's another breed you don't see every day: Leonberger. I'm enjoying getting to know the one at our local park. But when it comes to playing with him, Orson has short man's syndrome, and is way to intimidated to take his playful overtures as friendly.

You've just described my toy poodle Laika. Little stinker was ... went over, he paused, licked my hand, then resumed barking.

I think you should send him to live with me. ;-)

Heh. Thanks for the offer, but Mr "I'll do what you want me to, but in my own time and own way" stays firmly with me :-). He's my first dog (I've since accumulated two more) and is my true heart dog.
I make him sit before any treats, so now he figures if he comes over and sits, he'll get a treat.

Our dogs come inside and sit on the rug to get a treat. Spenser decided that if *we* go out ... - to trade for treats. It would have been five but I went in and cleaned out the waste basket.

I love it! Laika hasn't figured this out yet, I'll have to make sure he never makes the association.
And then there's the standard schnauzer that not only learned how to let herself out of her new (supposedly) escape-proof crate, but she would then let her friends out of theirs so she would have someone to play with!

My big cat figured out how to pop the screens out of the living room windows. At least that beats chewing a hole in the back door screen, which was his previous trick.

I have to leave some behind sometimes as a pack ... 5 and 2 or well you get my drift. Paulette~

Oh, yeah, I could do that. And your dogs are similar enough to entertain each other, aren't they?

I think they just hang out and dream mostly.
May I go off on a tangent? I've spent a career teaching group behavior, and a basic tenet is that tight, authoritarian leadership will prevent interaction and group growth each individual will feel s/he has to check everything with the leader.

I agree. Case in point I have a dune shack that is very secluded NOTHING around for miles, and the pups, ARE on top of my toes.
They will not THINK to go down to the beach, unless I say GO.
Although I'm not authoritarian, that is the pattern I always get with a pack of dogs. When I keep fosters ... me, each asking, "OK, what are you going to do to entertain me now?" I don't know why that happens.

Yup, EXACTLY the same here.
Mac and Pip are incapable of entertaining themselves. They play with no toys, chew no bones. If I leave them, they go into a coma, waiting for life to start up again. It's a puzzlement.

Yup, oh and BTW of course Chessies are my favourite breed, but I have thought of getting a Curly Coat someday.

DN.

This made me laugh as I own a Jack Russell Terror! He is the funniest thing I have ever thought possible! He is a good listener....er....when he wants to be :-) He is still just a pup at just over 6 mo and has his moments! But when he is giving this family a hard time, and as long as he isn't eating anything or doing anything that will kill him, you just have to let him run his course which is usually running circles around you and the yard a few times. Once he realizes that you aren't even paying attention, he drops his craziness and comes over for some love.

I have also owned and loved:
German Sheperd
Wiemerimmer (sp?)
Old English Sheep Dog
Mini Collie
I would have to say that my family has owned but I could live without any type of poodle!

Today I didn't plan on doing anything, and so far I'm right on schedule.......
Breeds at the lower end of my favorite list: Almost All Terrier Breeds - WAY TOO MUCH ENERGY!!! They are like little sugar rushes. I love to exercise my dogs but I need at least one hour of sleep a night.

Funny! When night time falls, my JRT becomes cat-like! Once he hits the covers, he snores into the morning. I rely on him to get me up in the morning haha! I usually have to drag him out of the bed! Of course the first whiff of early morning air and he conforms back into JRT mode!

I adore the Leonberger. A co-worker's son has two of them, and they are just wonderfully laid-back, friendly dogs. And, where we were going herding, a couple had 3 adults, a baby puppy (Oh jeez was he ever CUTE!) and a psychotic Irish Setter/Cocker cross w/ severe anxiety issues (a rescue dog they were forever trying to find a home for but knew they'd have him for life). Anyway...that 12 wk old baby (who probably weighed in around 25#) just went out there, half the size of the sheep, with such a great attitude. You could just tell that he felt pretty important out there! Shelly & The Boys

Nice.
The one I keep running into doesn't seem to realize that he's huge. He seems to do ok with some smaller playmates just not Orson.

Just wondering what breeds you guys really like out there.

I like friendly dogs. Shy dogs. Exuberant dogs. Gutsy dogs. Affectionate dogs. Playful dogs. Relaxed dogs. Regal dogs. Zoomie dogs. ... never seen a dog that didn't appeal to me on some level, never seen a dog that I found ugly.

Ditto. For looks I prefer dogs with a slightly blunter muzzle, not flat-faced but not too pointy either. But I love all dogs.

I currently have a lab X and am hopefully getting a newfoundland pup in December.
cheers
