Oh, btw. Mongo was adopted later that day by newlyweds. ... to opposite sides of the bed." Doncha just love it?

I'd be a bit circumspect about declaring victory. It can take several weeks (or more) before a dog becomes sufficiently comfortable in his new home that he starts trying to exercise his prerogative.

Heh. He's already on the bed, between the newlyweds...do I even want to know what "prerogative" you have in mind? Or which one of them he's going to "exercise" it with?

Go with your nose.

That's not helping. Any of these are possible:
1. Trainer genuinely feels threatened by volunteer and calls police.Police arrive. They see no real violence and make no arrest. The police made the right call.
2. Trainer genuinely feels threatened by volunteer and calls police.Police arrive. They see no real violence and make no arrest, but they got it wrong. Just as too often 35 years ago police didn't take domestic abuse seriously, it is possible that the police wrongly brushed aside a female on male attack.
3. Trainer did not feel threatened but called police. The trainer wasin on the publicity stunt making himself look foolish?
4. Volunteer genuinely thought trainer was harming dog and was doingthe right thing by intervening.
5. Volunteer knew trainer wasn't actually harming dog but didn't liketraining methods and participated in publicity stunt hoping to be arrested.
I could go on and on, but I suddenly got bored. The election returns in the other room are looking more interesting. One way or another, there's something wrong with the story, but I can't figure out exactly what. It is everything and nothing. To answer Chris's question, there ARE limits to what the shelter should do in pursuit of adoption. I wouldn't adopt out a dog to family that had a history of hurting dogs or giving them up for stupid excuses. (Maybe I won't be "allergic." to the next one.) But none of that applies in this case. A big, energetic, goof of a dog won't be more adoptable after several training sessions no matter what sort of methods are used. Look how often we've explained to a new person on this list the importance of the OWNER learning to handle his own dog.

Too many people think a dog can be shipped out to be trained the way a car can be sent off to be fixed. Instead, the dog learns to behave one way with one person and a different way another. (Cubbe does this with me and Jim. She knows not to beg food from me. She knows not to pull on the leash with him.)

I hardly know where to begin. What would I do? I'd start with clear guidelines as far as what circumstances ... Was it Eric Hoffer who said, "Beware the 'true believer'" And I don't accept positive punishment ... under any circumstances.

This may be my "almost last" post. Put my house on the market today, and applied to a wolf sanctuary in New Mexico. They don't punish wolves, do they? Emotion: smile

Well, that's the point. With Chris, anything *is* possible, especially when you consider that he wasn't even there.

IMO, the story was a fabrication of one sort or another, and a feeble attempt to take a cheap shot at traditional training.

So, okay. In my recovery from losing Mac, I left the shelterfor several days. In my absence, a member of ... He dragged Mongo from his run, and, whenMongo bit him, slipped on a choke chain and forced him into submission.

An exuberant dog has to be dragged from his run? Hmm. Exuberant dogs come bursting out of their runs.
(This, btw, was a demonstration for new volunteers on 'how to handle adog') Another volunteer simply threw herself on the 'trainer" andpummeled him. The 'trainer' ('35 years experience training policedogs') called the police and demanded her arrest. They didn't do it.

They might not have, some cops won't make an arrest in a case like this if there are no visible signs of injury.

I hope that volunteer was barred from the premises.
So, okay, again. I contacted my attorneys and and am chargingmy own freakin' shelter with permitting animal abuse.

Animal abuse is a criminal charge - you don't contact 'attorneys' to do that. You call the cops.
You need to calm down.
The "Dog Welfare Committee' is unapologetic. "Whatever it takes to get a dogadopted' is their position. Is it yours?

Yes, within reason. We don't adopt out to the morons who declare that their last dog got hit by a car, and they still don't have a fence and don't believe in using a leash because "we have 200 acres." Just one example.

Yep, I think this pretty much explains everything.

Smart.
Put my house on the market today, and applied to a wolf sanctuary in New Mexico.

I hope they don't allow computers there...
Good luck anyway, Chris.
You meant well.

for their support. The volunteer said she was acting in my behalf. That an animal would be abused on our grounds is .. words fail. Blasphemy? Impiety?

No, but once in awhile the wolves may eat the researcher. Happened to a friend of a friend, and I know what you are all thinking, but my friend actually told me the name of her friend that was eaten (I forgot of course)..
