I have noticed that my dog Jerry eats grass any time we go for a walk. Is that normal? Why is he doing it? What if he swallows something poisonous or toxic? Please advise!
I guess they eat grass just like we eat salads?
Dogs need vitamins too and grass (along with some other weeds) is its natural source. I don't think your dog will eat something toxic, generally they have a feeling for what shouldn't be eaten. Even if he does, this will be a good lesson for the future. Relax and rely on your dog's instincts!
As far as I've been told and what I've seen, they go for a certain kind of grass with some narrow leaves. I've been told they eat it because it's good for their stomache. If they feel like having trouble with the stomache they hunt that kinda grass.
Also, if your dogs eat grass on a regular basis, this could suggest dietary imbalance and you should let your vet know. Another idea is to give your dog some green vegetables to eat to see if he just wants "something green" to chew on. I read that cooking the vegetables makes them more digestable.
Basically if he's been doing it for a long time now he might just like that addition to his diet. If he's just started it could be a sign of an imbalance. Also, does he vomit right after? He might eat it because it hcan help them to vomit.
In any case, it's always a good idea to speak to your vet.
Most dogs eat grass because they have an upset stomach.

Sometimes it's just because they're hungry!
