Well this must be a dumb question. But I really wonder. What makes a dog lift the leg when it urinates? It's something we see every day but has anyone actually wondered why dogs do that Emotion: big smile

Good question! Dogs use their urine smell as a mark for other dogs. During a walk, many male and female dogs urinate repeatedly, which is supposed to let other canines know that "I've been here". A male dog lifts the leg to urinate on vertical surfaces (a tree, pole, car wheel, wall, etc). Experts think that urine smell on vertical surfaces lasts out longer than on horizontal ones. Besides, a mark like that is easier to be noticed by other dogs since it's closer to their nose.

Yes. Raphael, I've heard the same.

We have a male german shepherd in the family. When it goes to pee in the garden at home it almost pees like a girl. haha. At any case he does not lift his leg at all! Since it's his teritory and no other dogs come in there, why bother to lift it =) he simply pees and that's it. It fits pretty well with the above mentioned explanation, I think.
Does he pee on poles when out on walks then?
Yes it's quite dumb but I guess it's the same reason why some people squat when peeing.
