Wolf-dog cross breeding

This is a discussion thread · 2 replies
Hi everyone. I am on a canine course and would like some information about wolf and dog being cross bred by a country or organisation for a specific task. Can anybody please help?
Hi Anon,

I've heard about wolves and German Shepherds being crossed in a military institute in Perm, Russia. Their main purpose is to guard the border and to be working dogs for Federal Security Service. They say that unlike other wolf/dog cross breeds, these can be obedient, trained, and controlled by humans. They also say that "wolfdogs" need about 20 seconds to find a human by smell in a closed area, while Shepherds need 4-6 mins.

Update: I didn't realize this before but there's actually a breed called Saarloos Wolfdog that must have been bred long before the breeding program in Perm!
