Zeffie went in to the vets today for some blood work and x-rays. Dr. Bonnie just called to report that Zeffie has a large mass in the upper back of her chest, plus smaller masses in her lungs. She's not in pain at this time but her time of being pain-free is limited. So, in a few minutes, I'll go get Zeffie and bring her home. Tonight, we'll feed her some delicacies (Sardines, Eggs, Cheese - anything HRH disires). I'll give her a nice long brush out and massage. She'll get cuddled and we'll all say goodbye. Tomorrow morning, Zeffie will go back to the vets to be put to sleep.

Oh Chris, I am so incredibly sorry to hear that. The grand old lady will be much missed. Give her a few extra scritches and hugs from us.

Take care of yourselves. You will be in our thoughts.

We've enjoyed hearing about Zeffie for ... how long? We'll all miss her.
Peaceful rest to Zeffie, and courage to you, Chris.

I'm very sorry to hear it, Chris. Hope you don't mind: I googled up a lovely Zeffie bio post you made on her most recent birthday. Here's part of it:In many ways Zeffie looks remarkable for a 13 year old collie. Hardly any gray on her face and no gauntness. She had a tough winter - in January she had two toes amputated due to a fibrosarcoma. She had diarrhea during the post operative recovery and even though I had cleaned her up with a wet washcloth, it had soaked the fur and boy did she stink. She seemed to age trememoudously after the surgery - she was very disoriented and cried all the time.

The only way she would calm down was when I was curled up with her on the floor. So I spent much of the two days after surgery on the floor with Zeff. She stunk, I stunk but she's my dog. She has always been such a competent self sufficient dog and her total dependence on me was a new experience for her and for me. She had never been much for petting but during her recovery she developed a habit of pressing her forehead into my chest and I would scritch her shoulders and neck up to her ears.

I called it a dog hug. After she got her abilities back she has started to request (well royally demand) a lovin' session by pointing her nose in the air and lightly tapping her three toed foot. It's so cute that I can't do anything but love her up. She has me trained well.

All hail, Queen Zeffie! You are mightily loved.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry to hear this.
Sweet dreams Zeffie and all respect to you Chris, for being strong and brave enough to make this decision for her. it will still hurt like hell for you, but at least you can take comfort knowing that she'll be spared.

A half hour ago, when helping Zeffie up the front steps, she collapsed and within minutes died. I was able to stroke her and tell her that she's a very good girl, the best. She's now out on the front stoop covered with a blanket and it tucked in around her. I keep checking on her and I just can't shut the front door - my deep down fear is that she'll wake up and feel cold. Dave will be home within an hour and he'll help me move her to the van. I'm sorry if my writing isn't very coherent - I'm in a shock.
